How to calculate a tip

A tip is the bill multiplied by the percentage you want to leave. To split it, add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people.

Skip the maths and use the tip calculator

The formula

Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. Each person pays (bill + tip) ÷ number of people.

Step by step

  1. Decide the percentage you want to leave.
  2. Multiply the bill by that percentage and divide by 100.
  3. Add the tip to the bill for the total.
  4. Divide the total by the number of people if you are splitting it.

Worked example

A 64.00 bill with an 18% tip, split four ways

  • Tip = 64.00 × 0.18 = 11.52
  • Total = 64.00 + 11.52 = 75.52
  • Each person = 75.52 ÷ 4 = 18.88

The tip is 11.52, the total is 75.52, and each of the four people pays 18.88.
