Formula
Slabs for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) from the Income Tax Department of India: nil to ₹4 lakh, then 5% / 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30% above ₹24 lakh.
Section 87A rebate removes tax up to ₹60,000 when taxable income is at or below ₹12,00,000; marginal relief on the rebate is not modelled.
New regime only — the old regime and its deductions are not modelled.
Tax = new-regime slabs on (gross − ₹75,000 standard deduction), minus the Section 87A rebate where it applies, plus 4% cess.
Inputs used: Gross annual income.
Worked example
Salary of ₹12,75,000
- Taxable = 12,75,000 − 75,000 = ₹12,00,000.
- Slab tax = 0 + 20,000 + 40,000 + 60,000... up to ₹12,00,000 = ₹60,000.
- Taxable income is exactly ₹12,00,000, so the Section 87A rebate removes the full ₹60,000.
- Total tax = ₹0.
