How to calculate your hourly rate from a salary

Your hourly rate is your annual salary divided by the hours you actually work in a year. Those hours are your weekly hours multiplied by the number of paid weeks.

Skip the maths and use the salary to hourly calculator

The formula

Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weekly hours × paid weeks per year).

Step by step

  1. Take the gross annual salary before deductions.
  2. Write down the hours you work in a normal week.
  3. Multiply by the number of weeks you are paid for.
  4. Divide the salary by that number of hours.

Worked example

52,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks

  • Hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080
  • Hourly rate = 52,000 ÷ 2,080

The gross hourly rate is 25.00.
