How to calculate your hourly rate from a salary
Your hourly rate is your annual salary divided by the hours you actually work in a year. Those hours are your weekly hours multiplied by the number of paid weeks.
Skip the maths and use the salary to hourly calculator
The formula
Hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (weekly hours × paid weeks per year).
Step by step
- Take the gross annual salary before deductions.
- Write down the hours you work in a normal week.
- Multiply by the number of weeks you are paid for.
- Divide the salary by that number of hours.
Worked example
52,000 a year, 40 hours a week, 52 paid weeks
- Hours per year = 40 × 52 = 2,080
- Hourly rate = 52,000 ÷ 2,080
The gross hourly rate is 25.00.
