In short
Energy Savings Payback: Payback (years) = upfront cost ÷ (kWh saved × price + other yearly savings). Methodology stated, your own inputs only.
Formula: Payback (years) = upfront cost ÷ (kWh saved × price + other yearly savings).
What this calculator does
Energy Savings Payback: Payback (years) = upfront cost ÷ (kWh saved × price + other yearly savings). Methodology stated, your own inputs only. Worked example, questions and limitations included.
Use it to turn Currency (symbol only, never converted), Upfront cost of the upgrade, Energy saved per year, Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate), and the other shown inputs into a checked result you can compare, copy, or rerun with different assumptions.
The page shows the formula, a numeric worked example, and the assumptions that affect this energy calculation.
Inputs and what they mean
- Currency (symbol only, never converted)
- — choice value.
- Upfront cost of the upgrade
- — number value.
- Energy saved per year
- — number value.
- Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate)
- — number value.
- Other yearly savings, e.g. maintenance (blank = none)
- — number value.
How to use it
- Enter each value in the unit shown next to the box (use the unit converter first if your numbers are in other units).
- Check the breakdown to see every intermediate step.
- Read the limitations before relying on the result.
Formula
Methodology: simple (undiscounted) payback as defined in OpenStax Principles of Finance.
Price changes and discounting are ignored — use the Discounted Payback or NPV pages for those.
No price or savings figure is assumed.
Payback (years) = upfront cost ÷ (kWh saved × price + other yearly savings).
Inputs used: Currency (symbol only, never converted), Upfront cost of the upgrade, Energy saved per year, Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate), Other yearly savings, e.g. maintenance (blank = none).
Worked example
LED retrofit
- 40,000 × 0.12 = $4,800 a year.
- 12,000 ÷ 4,800 = 2.50 years.
Reading the result
The headline figure is the main answer. Any breakdown underneath shows the parts that make it up, so you can check the working and see what changes when you adjust an input.
Saved energy rates
No reference rates are saved yet. Enter the price per kWh from your own bill — this site never assumes one.
Limitations and assumptions
- Undiscounted; ignores savings after payback.
- Constant price and savings each year.
- Results are estimates built only from the figures you enter. No electricity, fuel or gas price, equipment efficiency or benchmark is built in — tariffs vary by supplier, region and time, and equipment data must come from the manufacturer. Designs and installations must be checked by a qualified professional.
- The result depends on the values you enter for this energy savings payback calculator; it does not supply missing rates, rules, prices, dates, or assumptions for you.

Common questions
Why isn't an electricity or fuel price filled in?
Prices differ by country, supplier, tariff and time of use, so there is no universal figure. Enter the rate from your bill or contract, or pick a dated saved rate if one is listed on the page.
Why simple payback?
It is easy to compare, but it ignores the time value of money and savings after payback. Use NPV for investment decisions.
What if prices rise?
Payback gets shorter. Run it again with your expected price to see the range.
Is this investment advice?
No. It is arithmetic on your figures.
How do I use the Energy Savings Payback Calculator?
Enter the required values for Currency (symbol only, never converted), Upfront cost of the upgrade, Energy saved per year, Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate), Other yearly savings, e.g. maintenance (blank = none). The calculator applies the formula on this page and shows the main result with any supporting breakdown so you can check the arithmetic.
What formula does the Energy Savings Payback Calculator use?
Payback (years) = upfront cost ÷ (kWh saved × price + other yearly savings). The visible formula section above lists the calculation path and the edge cases the page handles, so the result can be checked without relying on the form alone.
