## Formula

IT kW = servers × average W ÷ 1,000 + other IT kW.

- Methodology: IT equipment load as the PUE denominator (The Green Grid).
- Use measured average power, not nameplate — nameplate overstates load.
- Annual energy assumes the load runs all 8,760 hours.
- IT kW = servers × average W ÷ 1,000 + other IT kW.
- Inputs used: Number of servers, Average measured power per server, Network, storage and other IT (blank = none).

## Inputs

- Number of servers
- Average measured power per server
- Network, storage and other IT (blank = none)

## Worked example: A hall

400 servers at 350 W plus 20 kW of network and storage.
1. 400 × 350 ÷ 1,000 = 140 kW.
2. 140 + 20 = 160 kW.

## Common questions

### Nameplate or measured?

Measured average. Nameplate is a maximum and usually far above real draw.

### Is there a target or industry average built in?

No. Results depend on climate, design, load and measurement point, so none is shown. Compare against your own history.

### Does this include cooling?

No. Use the Facility Load calculator to add cooling and losses.

### How do I use the IT Load Calculator?

Enter the required values for Number of servers, Average measured power per server, Network, storage and other IT (blank = none). The calculator applies the formula on this page and shows the main result with any supporting breakdown so you can check the arithmetic.

### What formula does the IT Load Calculator use?

IT kW = servers × average W ÷ 1,000 + other IT kW. The visible formula section above lists the calculation path and the edge cases the page handles, so the result can be checked without relying on the form alone.

### Can the IT Load Calculator be used for exact decisions?

Use it as a calculation aid, not as a substitute for checking the underlying rule, contract, policy, or professional advice that applies to your situation. When a result depends on local rules, personal details, prices, or dates, enter those values yourself and confirm them before acting.

## Limitations and assumptions

- Average load; peaks are higher.
- Annual figure assumes constant load.
- Results are estimates built only from the figures you enter. No electricity, fuel or gas price, equipment efficiency or benchmark is built in — tariffs vary by supplier, region and time, and equipment data must come from the manufacturer. Designs and installations must be checked by a qualified professional.
- The result depends on the values you enter for this it load calculator; it does not supply missing rates, rules, prices, dates, or assumptions for you.
