## Formula

Occupancy (%) = inpatient days of care ÷ available bed-days × 100.

- Methodology type: clinical metric.
- Methodology: Pennsylvania Department of Health, Occupancy Rates in Health Facilities. This is descriptive service utilization, not a diagnosis or quality score.
- Available bed-days = sum of available beds for each day. Only with constant capacity may beds be multiplied by days.
- Match the facility, ward, dates and census convention in numerator and denominator; do not substitute the last day's beds.
- Occupancy (%) = inpatient days of care ÷ available bed-days × 100.
- Inputs used: Inpatient days of care in the period, Total available bed-days in the same period.

## Inputs

- Inpatient days of care in the period
- Total available bed-days in the same period

## Worked example: One reporting period

2,400 inpatient days and 3,000 available bed-days.
1. 2,400 ÷ 3,000 × 100 = 80%.

## Common questions

### What if bed capacity changes?

Sum the available capacity for each day to obtain bed-days. An end-of-period bed count is not enough.

### Is this the current census occupancy?

No. This is a period measure. A snapshot uses patients present and beds available at the same instant.

### Does 80% mean an ideal occupancy?

No. No target, safe limit or quality judgement is implied.

### How do I use the Occupancy Rate Calculator?

Enter the required values for Inpatient days of care in the period, Total available bed-days in the same period. The calculator applies the formula on this page and shows the main result with any supporting breakdown so you can check the arithmetic.

### What formula does the Occupancy Rate Calculator use?

Occupancy (%) = inpatient days of care ÷ available bed-days × 100. The visible formula section above lists the calculation path and the edge cases the page handles, so the result can be checked without relying on the form alone.

### Can the Occupancy Rate Calculator be used for exact decisions?

Use it as a calculation aid, not as a substitute for checking the underlying rule, contract, policy, or professional advice that applies to your situation. When a result depends on local rules, personal details, prices, or dates, enter those values yourself and confirm them before acting.

## Limitations and assumptions

- Definitions of available beds and inpatient days must match.
- No case-mix, acuity, throughput or safety adjustment.
- For education and operational analysis only. No diagnosis, treatment recommendations, prescribing, dosing instructions, or reimbursement entitlement. Scientific calculations require appropriate laboratory verification; operational estimates do not replace local clinical, safety or financial policies.
- The result depends on the values you enter for this occupancy rate calculator; it does not supply missing rates, rules, prices, dates, or assumptions for you.
