## How do I work out a sale price?

The sale price is the original price minus the original price multiplied by the discount percentage.

## Formula

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). If there is a second discount, first-discount price = original price × (1 − first discount ÷ 100), then final price = first-discount price × (1 − second discount ÷ 100). Discounts must be between 0% and 100%.

- Total savings = original price − final sale price.
- Effective discount = total savings ÷ original price × 100; if the original price is zero, effective discount is reported as 0% to avoid dividing by zero.
- Stacked discounts are sequential. They do not add directly because the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price.
- Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). If there is a second discount, first-discount price = original price × (1 − first discount ÷ 100), then final price = first-discount price × (1 − second discount ÷ 100). Discounts must be between 0% and 100%.
- Inputs used: Original price, Discount, Additional discount.
- Edge handling: Original price is required.; Original price cannot be negative.; Original price must be no more than 1000000000000.; Discount is required.; Discount cannot be negative..

## Inputs

- Original price
- Discount
- Additional discount

## Worked example: 20% off $100

The sale price is $80 and the saving is $20.
1. Start with the original price: $100.
2. Convert 20% to a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.20.
3. Apply the discount: $100 × (1 − 0.20) = $80.
4. Savings are $100 − $80 = $20, and the effective discount is 20%.

## Common questions

### How do I work out a sale price?

The sale price is the original price minus the original price multiplied by the discount percentage. Check the formula, example, and limitations on this page before using the result for a real finance decision.

### Do two discounts add together?

No. Each discount is applied in sequence, so 20% then 10% equals a 28% effective discount. On a $100 item, 20% off gives $80, then 10% off $80 gives $72.

### Can the price be zero?

Yes. The result and savings will both be zero. The calculator also avoids dividing by zero when it reports the effective discount.

### Does this include sales tax or shipping?

No. This calculator only applies the discount percentages to the entered price. Add tax, shipping, fees, or coupons separately if they apply to your purchase.

### How do I use the Discount Calculator?

Enter the required values for Original price, Discount, Additional discount. The calculator applies the formula on this page and shows the main result with any supporting breakdown so you can check the arithmetic.

### What formula does the Discount Calculator use?

Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). If there is a second discount, first-discount price = original price × (1 − first discount ÷ 100), then final price = first-discount price × (1 − second discount ÷ 100). Discounts must be between 0% and 100%. The visible formula section above lists the calculation path and the edge cases the page handles, so the result can be checked without relying on the form alone.

## Limitations and assumptions

- Discounts are capped at 100%, so the calculator will not create a negative sale price.
- Additional discounts are applied sequentially, not added together.
- Taxes, shipping, store rules, exclusions, and minimum purchase requirements are not included.
- Inputs outside the supported range are rejected rather than forced into a result.
- The result depends on the values you enter for this discount calculator; it does not supply missing rates, rules, prices, dates, or assumptions for you.
