## Formula

kW = specific power × flow. Cost = kW × hours × price. Cost per m³ = specific power ÷ 60 × price.

- Methodology: cost of compressed air from specific power, the approach in the U.S. DOE compressed air sourcebook.
- Specific power comes from the compressor's data sheet (e.g. CAGI sheet) at your pressure.
- Leaks and artificial demand count as delivered air.
- kW = specific power × flow. Cost = kW × hours × price. Cost per m³ = specific power ÷ 60 × price.
- Inputs used: Currency (symbol only, never converted), Specific power (manufacturer data sheet), Average air delivered, Hours in the period, Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate).

## Inputs

- Currency (symbol only, never converted)
- Specific power (manufacturer data sheet)
- Average air delivered
- Hours in the period
- Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate)

## Worked example: A year of air

Specific power 6.5 kW per m³/min, 10 m³/min, 4,000 h at $0.12.
1. 6.5 × 10 = 65 kW.
2. 65 × 4,000 = 260,000 kWh.
3. × 0.12 = $31,200.

## Common questions

### Why isn't an electricity or fuel price filled in?

Prices differ by country, supplier, tariff and time of use, so there is no universal figure. Enter the rate from your bill or contract, or pick a dated saved rate if one is listed on the page.

### Where does specific power come from?

The manufacturer's performance data sheet at your operating pressure. It is equipment-specific, so none is assumed.

### Free air or compressed volume?

Use the same basis as the data sheet, usually free air delivered (FAD). Check the formula, example, and limitations on this page before using the result for a real energy decision.

### Does this cover leaks?

Leaked air is delivered air, so it is included in cost if it is in your flow figure. Check the formula, example, and limitations on this page before using the result for a real energy decision.

### How do I use the Compressed Air Cost Calculator?

Enter the required values for Currency (symbol only, never converted), Specific power (manufacturer data sheet), Average air delivered, Hours in the period, Your energy price per kWh (from your bill or a saved rate). The calculator applies the formula on this page and shows the main result with any supporting breakdown so you can check the arithmetic.

### What formula does the Compressed Air Cost Calculator use?

kW = specific power × flow. Cost = kW × hours × price. Cost per m³ = specific power ÷ 60 × price. The visible formula section above lists the calculation path and the edge cases the page handles, so the result can be checked without relying on the form alone.

## Limitations and assumptions

- Specific power varies with pressure and part load.
- Dryers and auxiliary loads are not included unless in specific power.
- Results are estimates built only from the figures you enter. No electricity, fuel or gas price, equipment efficiency or benchmark is built in — tariffs vary by supplier, region and time, and equipment data must come from the manufacturer. Designs and installations must be checked by a qualified professional.
- The result depends on the values you enter for this compressed air cost calculator; it does not supply missing rates, rules, prices, dates, or assumptions for you.
